Sensitive Teeth Tips

  1. If your teeth are sensitive to hot and cold and the sensitivity only lasts for a few seconds it could well be caused by receding gums exposing the root surfaces of your teeth. Very often one of the sensitive toothpastes like Sensodyne or Colgate ProRelief will help. These can be used as a normal toothpaste and can also be used like an ointment before you go to bed i.e. rub a little of the paste onto the sensitive tooth/teeth and leave it there overnight and do this for at least 2 weeks.
  2. So what can cause sensitive teeth? – If you brush your teeth too soon after having an acidic drink or food you can wear away the tooth surface which has been softened by the acid. It is therefore best to wait 45-60mins after eating/drinking before you brush.
  3. Brushing too hard can cause sensitivity. It is more difficult to brush too hard with an electric toothbrush so these are a good idea. If you use a manual toothbrush then go for a medium texture. It is actually the toothpaste that is the abrasive part so make sure that your toothpaste is not one of the smokers variety that is harder on your teeth. Also ensure that it has Fluoride in it.
  4. Other causes of sensitivity can be defective fillings, tooth decay and cracked teeth. These tend to be less responsive to sensitive toothpaste. You may well need to resort to pain killers to help these at the moment.
  5. Don’t forget, particularly during nice weather, that a lot of drinks are very acidic and will dissolve your teeth and cause sensitivity. So when you are sitting down with a nice glass of cold Prosecco, Coke, orange juice or fruit tea to name a few your poor teeth will be squealing HELP!!
A Little Reminder

Lastly a little reminder of a few things that will make the coming weeks kinder on your teeth and gums:

  • Make sure you brush twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride. Ensure you don’t rinse out the toothpaste after brushing as it has much more of a beneficial effect if it is left on the teeth
  • Clean in between your teeth EVERY day with either floss, TePes or other cleaning aids that you have been shown by your dentist or hygienist
  • Reduce sugar intake in food or drink to just 4 times a day. Your teeth should be able to cope with that. Any more frequent and your risk of developing tooth decay increases dramatically. If you allow tooth decay to develop, it can lead to problems including toothache! The effect of any sugary food and drink on your teeth lasts for up to an hour so be careful and look out for hidden sugars
  • Bleeding from your mouth when you brush your teeth is usually because your gums are inflamed – you need to try and determine where the bleeding is coming from and clean more in that area not less.

We hope that you find these tips helpful. Let’s hope that you don’t need to use any of them. If you do, don’t forget that we are on the other end of the phone to give you further advice on 01293 782772 where you will be directed to your dentist for a telephone consultation.

I recently attended Katoomba Dental Practice and had a fantastic experience with Dr Kajaniy. From the moment I arrived, the staff were welcoming, professional, and made me feel completely at ease. Dr Kajaniy was extremely kind, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain everything clearly throughout the appointment. The treatment was gentle and thorough, and I really appreciated the care and attention to detail. It’s clear that patient comfort is a top priority here. I left feeling very happy with the results and much more confident about future dental visits. I would highly recommend Dr Kajaniy and the team at Katoomba Dental Practice to anyone looking for excellent dental care.

I have been attending this Dental practice for many many many years!!!! The treatment , kindness and care always first class from the Reception staff, Hygienist Jo, and Dentist Naveed Jamil. I was very sad to learn that Naveed retired recently so wondered who would now look after me I needn't have worried as I met my new dentist, Kajaniy, for my check up today. She is a lovely caring lady who will do very well at Katoomba.

After suffering with severe wisdom tooth pain for about four weeks, I decided to visit Katoomba Dental Surgery, and I’m so grateful I did. My regular dentist had already advised that the tooth would likely need to be extracted and had referred me to the hospital, which meant waiting while I was still in a lot of pain. My husband then booked me an appointment at Katoomba Dental Surgery. Sandy, at reception was incredibly kind, caring and helpful. She suggested I email my X-ray from my local dentist so that Dr Lui could review it before my appointment, which I really appreciated. I also spoke with Dr Lui on the phone beforehand and he was very patient and understanding while I explained the severe symptoms I had been experiencing. He wanted to examine my mouth himself, so I was able to see him later that same day. After taking another X-ray, Dr Lui explained that the best option would be to extract the tooth. Although he mentioned he doesn’t usually do extractions straight away, he could see how much pain I was in and kindly went ahead to help relieve it. I’d also like to mention the other reception staff who were so warm and welcoming when I arrived. The whole team made me feel comfortable and genuinely cared for. I’m very thankful for the compassion and professionalism shown by everyone at the clinic and would highly recommend them.

Absolutely shocking. Would not recommend. Reception staff RUDE and unapologetic despite their repeated errors. Requests directly to reception staff simply IGNORED. Request to make a complaint regarding poor service and attitude of employees again simply IGNORED.

I am very very happy with my dentures and all of the service I have reviewed. I went in with 10 year old ill fitting NHS dentures and 6 rotten teeth which I thought would have to be removed. The dentist reassured me to my surprise that I could keep my teeth and then got me fitted for new ones in a timely manner. I now have great dentures that are comfortable, are actually a help to my health as I am a severe sufferer of Chrome's and now being able to properly chew food is helping significantly. I highly recommend this dentists.

Being a new patient at Katoomba Dental Practice. My friend, even her parents had much praise and positive feedbacks as to Katoomba Dental Practice. Thankfully my previous dentist was not ‘ up to MY ASK ‘. Therefore i tried Katoomba Dental Practice. No regrets. Staff are all friendly, always smiling and most accommodating. The Practice is always clean and well presented. Giving one a positive, right from the time of entry into the building. My main man - Dr Chin Liu gave me sound advice. With a full explanation as to the process - start to termination. Putting my interests first, with a LONG TERM GOAL. Questions i had were answered and fully explained. My Dental therapist Sophie McKay. Having extensive work done. Her conscientiousness has left a gratefulness with me that has me in confidence in the work done and any further work to still be done. Sophie very thorough - making sure that the best was done. After a short time - i knew i was in good hands. Hence - i was able to relax knowing the work was completed to a high, best standard. Some persons are able to make one comfortable and relaxed. Sophie is able to do that - as she genuinely does care. Again - questions i had were answered and i am better informed than before. My recommendation - is use/ try Katoomba Dental Practice. They have a very solid base/ foundation in knowing exactly what is best for your needs and situation. i see no need, not even long term - to look elsewhere for another Dental Practice. N e v e r - be put off as in having a professional treatment done, over finances. You will always have money, but once your OWN teeth are gone. Substitutes - never fully replace your own teeth.
